Catholic Online reports that Lizzy Myers from Ohio was diagnosed with Usher’s Syndrome Type II, the disease that will eventually rob her entirely of both her hearing and sight. When Lizzy’s parents discovered that their child was suffering from this rare disease, they decided to make a “visual bucket list” to show her as many things as they can before she becomes blind. “I feel like I have very little time to show her so much,” the girl’s father, Steve Myers, said. “Like bonfires and fireflies,” the mother added. The general manager of Turkish Airlines was so touched by Lizzy’s story that he offered the family free plane tickets anywhere in the world. When the Myers’ were planning their trip to Rome, they could not even imagine that their daughter would have a chance to come face-to-face with the Pontiff himself. Lizzy, her 3-year-old sister and parenst were given special seats for the Pope’s general audience on Wednesday, April 6.

Lizzy gave him the gift of a piece of a meteorite from an observatory she recently visited. “I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. Since the beginning of all of this, this is the first time I have felt peace.” “Lizzy was awestruck. She just stared at him, she had totally big eyes,” Christine Myers said. But as soon as Pope Francis came up to where Lizzy was, a calm came over me,” the father said Steve Myers confessed that he was extremely nervous before the meeting, but the pontiff’s presence calmed him entirely. “I was very nervous coming up to that point, I started having stomach pains. But as soon as Pope Francis came up to where Lizzy was, a calm came over me, I don’t even know how to explain it. I believe and I think that what Pope Francis has done for her – if there’s any chance for a miracle, it would be there,” he said. Lizzy, who simply calls Pope Francis the “big guy in the white hat” was also very excited to meet him. The Myers’ hope that the story of their daughter will encourage other parents with children suffering bi-lateral hearing loss to genetically test their children for Usher II Syndrome and offer as many visual experiences as they can before the disease takes its toll.
