Six people were critically injured in Awka, Anambra State yesterday when a tanker laden with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost its brake along the Awka Enugu Expressway and crushed four vehicles in the process.
Daily Sun gathered that the tanker was descending the sloppy part of Agu Awka near the Anambra Government House after the popular Arroma Junction when
the vehicle’s brake failed and the driver lost control crushing the vehicles within the Esther Obiako Estate junction.
Few months back, a trailer  crashed at the same spot and killed a man and four family members.
“There was a loud bang when the tanker hit the first casualty, a 14 –seater bus, crushed another saloon car, two other vehicles including a motorcycle before somersaulting and finally crashed into a small building within the area. We thought the tanker would catch fire and burst into flames but thank God for the quick response of the state emergency management unit,” a source said.
When Daily Sun got to the scene, a combined team of policemen, Federal Road Safety Corps officers, Fire Service officials were seen trying to put the situation under control.
Confirming the incident, the FRSC Sector Commander, Sunday Michael Ajayi said: “The six injured victims have been taken to the hospital for medical attention.”  He noted that the command had been on intensive round-the-clock operations along the expressway.
most especially this period that motorists ply one way within the construction area.
Some sympathizers who spoke at the scene called on the Federal government to expedite action on the reconstruction of Onitsha –Enugu Expressway which they described as the most delayed road project in the entire South East.
